You took a course fuelled with excitement to become a mantrailing instructor…
And then after the dopamine hit of the certificate - came overwhelm.
Every dog and handler is different. Every session requires you to think at lightning speed and adapt to each team on the fly - and then you’re hit with all the whys!
And then there’s the business side.
It’s wild, but setting up trails is possibly the easiest part of mantrailing - aside from the cognitive load of constantly keeping track of what scents were laid where! The trickier parts of mantrailing are invisible.
It’s challenging - and a load of fun. But it’s not as simple as it might look at first glance. Every session is different. Every dog is different. Every handler is different. The Academy is how you keep up.
I’ve long been frustrated with the lack of meaningful CPD for mantrailing instructors. I spent years at the top of the industry watching what was missing and I’ve finally built the missing piece.
Because your initial training is just the beginning of your skill building. Your instructor course taught you to trail - it didn't teach you to teach.
Taught by someone who is still working with clients and solving the same problems you face.
Classes are always mixed ability. And that means a lot of task switching and adapting to different needs of dogs and handlers. And it’s learning to teach different people - not just different dogs.
Yet, if you’ve been taught there’s just ONE way of doing things, you might feel like you’re on the back foot. Or that you’re not as capable as your shiny certificate suggests.
That’s not because you’re not capable though. It’s because your training stopped just when you were getting started. The Trailing K9s Academy picks up where your initial training left you high and dry. And fills the gap between theory and real world competency.
“We tend to learn the basics on instructor courses but after that it can be quite isolating in this industry. These workshops are fantastic to get together and brainstorm new ideas, tailor existing ones and be pushed outside your comfort zone!”
Pippa’s Pooches
We have a theme each month where we’ll cover the basics and progression, with cheat sheets and video resources to help the learning stick (so you can action it).
Every month you get access to:
Delivered by me or other industry experts - we’ll deep dive into a topic and set the stage for your month’s focus. From mantrailing science to practical how-tos, you’ll develop your skills in all the areas that matter for your progression.

A series of short, snappy videos on one exercise or theory. I’ll explain it, show you how to do it, and show you what to do when it goes wrong.
You’ll also get a cheat sheet to refer back to so you don’t have to hold everything in your head.
Plus bonus content
For every exercise we cover, you’ll get ready made client handouts that you can easily change to your own branding. So you’re not learning things you can’t bring onto real trails - you’re given what you need to execute and share what you learn.
From scent science to business guidance, I'll bring you the best in the industry to help guide you and your mantrailing business forwards. Because all the trailing skills in the world mean nothing if you can’t get consistent clients.
The one of a kind guide to being an instructor in the field. This is an ever evolving document which updates as things change. You can print and pop it in a folder to keep and update as you go.
The theory is important - being able to ask questions without being judged is vital. But having the opportunity to physically train different dogs and get real-life coaching is invaluable. As an academy member you get priority access to train the trainer sessions, retreats and skill ups.
You’ll have the opportunity to apply for assessment to be a fully fledged Trailing K9s instructor - complete with shiny badge and certificate so you can show off your accomplishments. There are 3 routes to application to suit people who’ve taken different journeys into the sport.

“Kathryn is not a cookie-cutter 'how-to' instructor. She is a teacher (and a mentor), as such she coaches you to think about learning and to analyse for yourself.
I love her explanations and her remarkable power of observation and details. I would highly recommend Kathryn for anyone interested in Mantrailing, no matter how beginner or experienced.“
~ Ana Porroche-Escudero, PhD
Dogs you can handle. Clients, pricing, and no-shows?
That's another story.

The time and effort Kathryn puts into her online seminars and mentoring is outstanding.
It's also amazing as the content is there for you to watch as many times as you like, it's the perfect mantrailing library.
With all the knowledge and experience Kathryn has you truly won't be disappointed with what you get (and it's an absolute bargain as well).

I’m a certified mantrailing instructor (of course) and was previously a Head Instructor for Mantrailing Global before I decided to go independent.
I'm a former security dog handler and trainer for the NTIPDU.
Have achieved Level 2 Scent Imprint for Dogs Trailing Instructorship and recently became one of 13 Instructors across the globe of IlMa Global K9 for Human ID Tracking.
But my experience is much deeper than just mantrailing, with a decade as a behaviourist specilaising in dog aggression cases - which gives me unique insights and experience that you won’t find anywhere else.
After completing my degree in animal behaviour, I started my career training detection dogs and protection dogs in 2014.

After that, I progressed onto working canine behaviour cases, specialising in complex aggression and dogs with bite history. But over time, I found my niche in mantrailing. Why?
Because the level of dog geekery involved is like nothing else. I love troubleshooting, learning, and sharing what I know with other passionate dog geeks.
And I love using my past experience to help the owners who most often come to mantrailing - the ones who can’t attend other classes and for whom mantrailing with their dog is often the highlight of their week.
I’ve mentored and trained mantrailing teams across the globe. From Ireland, to the USA to Canada to New Zealand and everywhere in-between.
I’ve trailed with teams of all abilities in a variety of environments, focused on helping them become better teams.
I've been there learning on the ground how to problem solve, how to coach better and how to help people thrive.
This Academy is for instructors who actively want to learn and improve. If you’re looking for a badge or certificate without any curiosity or interest in skill development, this isn’t for you!
It’s for
This isn’t
It's a community plus learning hub with expert mentorship and teaching that’ll make you feel every inch the professional you aspire to be.
“Kathryn's helped me work through some challenges and give feedback on my own trailing, but most of all has made me an even better instructor.
Being relatively new as a Mantrailing instructor, it's easy to find yourself feeling inferior and unsure how to work through a challenge with a client you've not yet experienced.
Having the ability to have detailed conversations about specific situations, meant that I could be a better instructor for my clients which is all I want. Kathryn will give you more knowledge, support, and confidence to progress as an instructor and also progress your clients.“
~ Megan
The Mantrailing Membership is aimed at handlers who want to geek out and learn more about the sport. The Academy is specifically for instructors - it goes deeper, covers teaching skills, business development, and the science behind the how-tos, and gives you the opportunity to work towards becoming a Trailing K9s accredited instructor.
No. The Academy is designed for instructors at all stages - whether you've just finished your first course and feel completely overwhelmed, or you've been teaching for years and have hit a ceiling on what you can learn alone. The monthly themes and content are designed to meet you where you are.
Every month you get:
A live webinar on a themed topic (recorded if you can't make it live)
A live Q&A where you can bring real questions from real sessions
How-to videos with cheat sheets to refer back to
Plus, bonus access to a hub of brandable cheat sheets you can give directly to your clients, guest expert sessions, and priority access to in-person train the trainer days, skill ups, and retreats
No. While Kathryn leads the majority of content, the Academy also brings in industry experts to cover areas outside mantrailing - including business, marketing, and the science behind the sport. The point is that you get the right person teaching the right thing, not one person pretending to know everything.
There are three pathways depending on where you're starting from:
The instructor course - for those newer to teaching mantrailing, with a dog training background or demonstrable handling experience.
The top-up course - for existing mantrailing instructors who want to develop their skills and methodology and bring them in line with the Trailing K9s standard.
The assessment route - for experienced instructors who can already demonstrate the required skills. This involves a structured assessment over approximately three days, including observed training and teaching real clients.
All routes involve demonstrated competency - you earn the accreditation, you're not handed it.
Absolutely - it’s what the Academy was built for. If you've done your course, got your certificate, and then been left to figure the rest out alone, this is your next step.
Not necessarily. The assessment route exists specifically for people who already have strong skills and experience. You won't be asked to start from scratch - but you will be asked to demonstrate your competency in a real teaching environment, because that's what the accreditation actually means.
You can absolutely focus on the trailing content if that's what you need right now. But the business content exists because every struggling instructor tells me similar stories - they’re brilliant at trailing, but their booking processes, prices, and marketing are leaving them on less than minimum wage when you crunch the numbers. You don't have to engage with it, but it's there when you need it.
The Academy provides independent CPD that isn't tied to any single organisation's methodology or commercial interests. Content is delivered by Kathryn and a range of industry experts. You're not paying to maintain a badge - you're paying to develop skills and knowledge. The accreditation you can work towards here requires demonstrated skill, not just continued membership.
All webinars and Q&As are recorded. You can watch back at any time. The how-to videos and cheat sheets are available in the hub whenever you need them.
Yes. As long as you stay a member, you keep the founding member rate. The price increases after the founding period closes - so the sooner you join, the more you save long term.
That's exactly why the content is structured the way it is. Short how-to videos. Cheat sheets you can print and use in a session. Monthly themes so you're not drowning in a back catalogue on day one. The goal is that things are small enough to action - and you can have geek marathon sessions when you feel like it.
Yes. There's no long-term contract. Though if you joined at founding member pricing and cancel, you'd rejoin at the current rate.
